क्रिकेट का महाकुंभ- 2019

 

30 मई क्षितिज पर है और सूरज की पहली किरण अपने साथ डेढ़ महीनों तक चलने वाले इस उत्सव के आगमन का पैगाम ले कर आएगी | यह विश्व कप एक दिवसीय विश्व कप के संस्करणों का बारहवाँ अध्याय है जिसे अंग्रेजों की सरजमीं पर पाँचवी बार आयोजित किया जा रहा है | तो, यदि ये कहा जाये की कप की “घर – वापसी ” हो रही है तो ये तकनीकी तौर पर गलत न होगा | पर मजे की बात ये है कि विश्व कप का आयोजन कहीं भी हो – इंग्लैंड से ये हमेशा Brexit ही रहा है अर्थात ये आंग्ल टीम के लिए बिहारी की उस चंचला नायिका का प्रतीक है जो अपनी अदाओं से रीझाती तो बहुत है पर हाथ कभी आती नहीं | इंग्लैंड तीन मर्तबा फ़ाइनल तक का सफर तय कर चुकी है पर कभी वेस्ट-इंडीज़ तो कभी ऑस्ट्रेलिया उस के राह का रोड़ा बन गए | इस विश्व कप में उसकी दावेदारी बहुत ही मजबूत है और हो भी क्यों न – पिछले दो वर्षों में उसने अपनी सरजमीं पर मात्र 4 मैच गवाएं है | उनकी बैटिंग देख के तो यही कहने का मन करता है – “पेट्रोल खतम ही नहीं होंदा है | ” दूसरी टीम जो हर बार खिताब की प्रबल दावेदार के रूप में उतरती है पर कभी भी “Iron Throne” पर नहीं बैठ पाती वो है दक्षिण अफ्रीका | इतनी अच्छी टीम , इतने अच्छे खिलाड़ी लेकिन जैसे ही मौका आता है – विपक्षियों को आखिरी मुक्का मार के धूल चटाने का – ये कर्ण के माफिक अपनी सारी विद्या भूल जाते हैं – जरूर इन्हे किसी परशुराम ने श्राप दिया हुआ है अन्यथा कोई ठोस वजह नजर नहीं आती इनके औसत प्रदर्शन की | इस संस्करण में भी ये दोनों अपनी सैन्य वाहिनी के साथ विपक्षियों के मान-मर्दन का प्रयास करेंगी |

अभी तक के 11 विश्व – कप में विजेता रही टीमें – ऑस्ट्रेलिया ( 5 बार) , भारत ( 2 बार) , वेस्ट-इंडीज़ ( 2 बार), श्रीलंका और पाकिस्तान में से वेस्ट-इंडीज़ तो अपनी चमक पूर्णतया खो चुका है | इस में बहुत सारे ऑल-राउंडर और मास्टर ब्लास्टर हैं पर पैनापन बिलकुल भी नहीं – किसी तरह गिरते पड़ते इन्होने विश्व कप में क्वालिफ़ाई किया है | श्रीलंका भी जयवर्धने और संगाकारा के प्रस्थान के बाद पुनर्निर्माण के दौर से गुजर रहा है | पाकिस्तान ने भी पिछले दो वर्षों में बहुत अच्छे परिणाम नहीं दिये हैं और अपने प्रदर्शन से कुछ खास करने की आशा नहीं जगाती है  – हालांकि इसी टीम ने इंग्लैंड में ही हुए चैम्पियन ट्रॉफी में दो साल पहले जीत हासिल की थी पर सेमी फ़ाइनल तक का सफर इसके लिए मुश्किल ही है |

अब बच जाती हैं दो पूर्व विजेता टीमें जिसमे से ऑस्ट्रेलिया तो अलादीन के जिन्न की माफिक अचानक से प्रकट हो गई है और हर बार की तरह कप की प्रबल दावेदार बन गई है – स्मिथ तथा वार्नर की वापसी ने इस टीम को अल्ट्राटेक सीमेंट जैसी मजबूती दे दी है | जिस प्रकार से इसने हालिया सम्पन्न एकदिवसीय शृंखला में भारत को भारत की ही मिट्टी पर 3-2 से धूल चटाई थी, उससे इसके खिलाड़ियों में गज़ब का आत्मविश्वास आ गया है |

भारतीय दल ने विगत दो वर्षों में जिस निरंतरता के साथ प्रदर्शन किया है वो अभिभूत करने वाला है | आश्चर्य तो ये है कि ये कमाल भारत की परंपरागत ताकत रहे बल्लेबाजी की वजह से नहीं आया है वरन बूमराह, कुलदीप और भुवनेश्वर जैसे गेंदबाजों की वजह से आया है | जिस टीम में भुवनेश्वर जैसे विश्व-स्तरीय गेंदबाज का स्थान पक्का न हो , उसकी गेंदबाजी के स्तर का अंदाजा आप खुद ही लगा सकते हैं | भारतीय दल यदि ये फ़ार्म जारी रखती है तो किसी भी टीम के लिए ये किला तोड़ पाना “मुश्किल ही नहीं नामुमकिन है|” किन्तु यक्ष प्रश्न ये है कहीं हम अपना बेहतर प्रदर्शन पीछे छोड़ के तो नहीं आए और ऊपर से आईपीएल के व्यस्त कलेण्डर ने हमारे खिलाड़ियों को थका तो नहीं दिया है |

इसके अलावा न्यूज़ीलैंड ने भी केन विलियमसन के नेतृत्व में अच्छा प्रदर्शन किया है – पिछली बार ये कप जीतने के काफी करीब पहुंचे भी थे और अगर ये अपनी क्षमता के अनुरूप खेले तो तो सेमी फ़ाइनल तक पहुँचने के इनके आसार प्रबल हैं |

एक टीम जिसका जिक्र बहुत जरूरी है वो है अफगानिस्तान- इस टीम ने पिछले चार सालों में बहुत प्रगति की है | यद्यपि सेमी फ़ाइनल प्रवेश की उम्मीद करना अभी बेईमानी होगा पर , 2-3 अच्छी टीमों को अगर हरा दे तो ये तुक्का मत समझिएगा | बांग्लादेश के बहुत बाद इसने विश्व स्तर पर पदार्पण किया है पर उससे बहुत आगे निकल गई है |

मेरे हिसाब से जो चार दल सेमी फ़ाइनल तक पहुँचने चाहिए , वो हैं – भारत,इंग्लैंड, ऑस्ट्रेलिया और दक्षिण अफ्रीका | उसके बाद का सफर तो उस दिन-विशेष के प्रदर्शन पर निर्भर करेगा

सबसे अच्छी बात जो इस विश्व कप के साथ है , वो है इस का स्वरूप – जिसमे सारी टीमें एक दूसरे से भिड़ेंगी और 4 सर्वश्रेष्ठ टीम सेमी फ़ाइनल में प्रविष्ट होंगी | ऐसा स्वरूप इससे पहले सिर्फ एक बार 1992 में देखा गया था और उसे अभी तक का सबसे उम्दा विश्व कप माना जाता है | पाकिस्तान किसी तरह गिरते – पड़ते विजेता बना था और भारत का प्रदर्शन बहुत ही निराशाजनक था किन्तु खुशी की बात ये थी कि भारत ने पाकिस्तान को विश्व कप में हराने का सिलसिला जो उस समय शुरू किया था, वो आज भी जारी है |

तो 30 मई आपके बालकनी से झांक रहा है | सभी टीमों ने डेरा दाल दिया, कुरुक्षेत्र सज चुका है, दुदुंभी बजने वाली है , रणबांकुरे कवच पहन चुके हैं और हम “संजय” के माध्यम से इस चमत्कारिक दृश्य – विधान देखने के लिए तैयार हैं | “Winter……Oops World Cup is Coming”!!!!!!

India vs Australia (WC T20 – 2016)

The slot for the last semi-finalist was vacant and it was to be decided by this match. Therefore, this match was a virtual quarter final in all its practical sense. India had defeated Australia in the Quarter-Finals of 2011 WC. So, the crowd was expecting a repeat performance that would make Australians catch the first flight back home.

The format of this World Cup has been very exciting and it has kept all the teams on their toes. One small mistake and the team can be out of the tournament and this is why all the teams that entered the Semis were worthy enough to claim the spots. Earlier in the day, Afghanistan snatched a superb win from West Indies halting their Caribbean Calypso momentarily. Afghanistan has been making rapid strides in International arena and soon, they will be a team to reckon with- at least in this format of the game, which augurs well for the Cricket.

India was the favourite to win the match since India had recently whitewashed Australians 3-0 in their own den and it has 8-4 head to head record – winning the last five consecutive matches. Also, the bowling line up of Aussies lacked the depth in the absence of Mitchelle Johnson and Mitchelle Starc. On the contrary, Indian bowling was doing a tremendous job in last couple of months- after the inclusion of Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah. The former is getting wickets mandatorily in power plays while the latter is getting such a accurate Yorkers in death overs that India has given only 7.07 runs per over in the last 5 overs in all the matches played in 2016. These two alongwith Ashwin has given such a teeth to bowling unit that Indian bowling has never failed to deliver in the last two months ( except for the last match against Aussies) and helped India race to the top of ICC world ranking in T20.

The toss was won by Smith and he elected to bat. His decision was proved to be right in the initial overs due to some lusty hitting by Usman Khwaja and Aaron Finch. After an excellent first over by “Nehraji” that went for four runs, Kangaroos raced to 53/0 in 4 overs ( Ashwin going for 22 runs in his first  over). On the first ball of fifth over, Nehra beat Finch by pace and the ball scooped in the air towards mid wicket- only Raina was backing up far ahead and could not run back to take the catch. On the second ball, he pitched up the ball to Khwaja, who got an edge to wicketkeeper Dhoni and Australians were 54/1. This was the turning point of the innings as Aussies could not get the momentum for the next 10 overs. They scored only 51 runs in next 10 overs and lost 4 wickets that included crucial wickets of Aaron Finch ( Ranked no. -1 in ICC T20 World Ranking) and Steven Smith. Australian Innings can be tri-furcated in the following way :-

Of the 10 middle overs, Yuvraj bowled 3 excellent overs for 19 runs and took a crucial wicket of Smith. Ashish Nehra again did a splendid job by giving only 20 runs and taking the wicket of Usman Khwaja. Though, Ashwin proved to be expensive, still he took his 50^th wicket with a delightful delivery to beat David Warner in the flight. Indian bowling again clicked as a unit and everyone except Jadeja got a wicket. Indian fielding is time and again proving to be the strongest link and continuously saving 15-20 runs in the field and it was no different in this match. Aussies batting revolved around Finch’s 43 and Maxwell’s rather quite 31 off 28 balls. When he was looking dangerous, he was clean bowled by Bumrah. Thus, Aussies managed 160 runs in 20 overs thanks to two lusty blows by Peter Nevill off the last two bowls – one went for 4 and another went for 6. This score was manageable for the “strong” Indian batting line up.

What Indians are doing right as a bowling unit- exactly opposite is happening with the batting. The failure of top three – Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina puts Indian middle order under undue pressure and again and again it has to be bailed out by Kohli, Yuvraj and Dhoni esp. Virat Kohli since the other two are clearly past their primes. Kohli is in such a “Virat” form these days that he is single-handedly winning the matches and covering up the failures of rest. The day he fails, India finds herself in a plight similar to that of against B’desh and NewZeland.

The story was repeated in this match too- India got off to a sedate start (23/0 in 3.5 overs) when Dhawan once again got out to his poor shot selection. In came Kohli and initiated his innings by two delectable shots against Hazlewood – one flicked towards fine leg and other squared cut getting 10 runs off the over. In the next over, Rohit was bowled by Watson and he departed after a painfully slow 12 (16). Suresh Raina met the same fate after a brief 10(7) and India were left at 49/3 (7.4 Overs). Yuvraj and Kohli resurrected the innings again with a partnership of 45 runs in 38 balls. Yuvraj was in a lot of pain when he was brilliantly caught by Watson in covers after his 21(18 balls) and this proved to be a blessing in disguise as his departure meant Dhoni was out in the middle – ensuring that Kohli was calm till the end and running like a tiger.

At this point of time, India needed 67 runs off 36 balls. The next over by Watson went for only 8 runs after a solitary boundary by Dhoni and the equation changed to 59 runs off 30 balls. We witnessed some remarkable running b/w the wickets in the next over – 12 runs came off Hazlewood over and it consisted of only one boundary and four 2s. Dhoni and Kohli sucked the spirit out of the fielders by taking chances against the arms of Warner and Maxwell and winning those chances. The athleticism shown by these two was the turning point of the chase. At the end of this over, India required 47 runs off 24 balls. The next over was an excellent over by Watson in which Dhoni could send only the last ball towards third man boundary that made the equation 39 runs off 18 balls. Watson had a very satisfying match, as far his performance was concerned- he contributed by bat (18 runs) , by ball (23/2) and took a marvelous catch in the field- still, this was his last international match.

Faulkner’s over proved to be a death knell for Kangaroos as Virat Kohli had gained momentum by now and hit two boundaries and a six in the first three deliveries and finally, it accounted for 19 runs leaving India with 20 runs away from the win in last two overs. Kohli was in no mood to take it to the last over though. He missed the first slower ball by Hazlewood but what followed was a hara-kiri. The next three balls were sent to the ropes and again the penultimate ball was dispatched to the boundary. The last six ball and only 4 runs was required – a situation where Dhoni is the master and he again hit the winning boundary of the first ball of the Faulkner’s over completing the formality. India’s innings can be trifurcated in the following way:-

Once again, Kohli proved to be the mainstay of Indian batting and took the team to the finishing line through his scintillating 82*(51) hitting 9 boundaries and 2 sixes. He paced his innings beautifully :-

He took his time to settle down and scored only 20 runs off his first 20 balls. The next 20 balls accounted for 30 runs but the last 11 balls caused mayhem for the Australian bowlers hitting 6 boundaries and 1 six. He is truly the chasing machine for India and though – he termed this as a success of Indian batting unit- it was undoubtedly his efforts that took Indian to the Semi-Finals.

It will be a treat to watch India and West Indies in the second SF to be played in Mumbai on Thursday. Here we come Windies!!!!!!
